Affirmative Action in the United States essays
Affirmative Action in the United States essays The writer Mary Anne Warren is focusing on describing the current practices in many organizations today in regards to the implementing a goal vs. a quota system for the purposes of affirmative action. She defines a quota as "Those who use the term "quotas" pejoratively tend to assume that the numerical standards will be set so high or enforced so rigidly that strong reverse discrimination-that is, the deliberate hiring of demonstrably less well qualified candidates-will be necessary to implement them." (Warren, 370). Warren then describes goal as "The term "goal", on the other hand, suggests that this will not be the case, and that good faith efforts to comply with the standards by means short of strong reverse discrimination will be acceptable." (Warren, 370). The critical thing that must be understood when exploring the subject is that the writer is describing how affirmative action is being applied in American organizations today in other words the current reality. However, she fails to speak to us about how the law designs this program to function. This is the critical component that American organizations must be educated to understand. Affirmative action as defined by law is most definitively not based on a quota system. In fact, what is not widely known is that this program can be equally used by all individuals provided that an inequality exists in the group that they belong to as not being reflected in the work force. So what is affirmative action? What is it designed to do? It is not designed to provide an opportunity to an unqualified candidate. It is designed as "a way of compensating individuals or groups for past injustices or for present disadvantages stemming form past injustices" (Warren, 373). It is further designed "as a means about bringing about further future goods-for example, raising the status of downtrodden groups." (Warren, 373). The keyword in these quotes is the word "group". ...

Humor in Lysistrata and She Stoops to Conquer Still Funny Today
Humor in Lysistrata and She Stoops to Conquer Still Funny Today Aristophanes classical Greek play Lysistrata and Oliver Goldsmiths 18th century British play She Stoops to Conquer, both contain various types of humor. The humor found in these plays was certainly enjoyed by the audiences of the time. However, it is certainly true that much of this humor is still enjoyed today.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Humor in Lysistrata and She Stoops to Conquer: Still Funny Today specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More For contemporary audiences yet delight in the satire of Lysistrata, the farcical comedy of manners in which the themes of national war and peace, and yes, even war and peace between the sexes, all receive humorous treatment. Next, She Stoops to Conquer is a comedy of manners, where irony prevails amid frequent misunderstandings. Set in the environs of that prevailing polite society, the characters try very hard to preserve the amenities and civility, but frequently fail, as their t rue actions become known. First, in Lysistrata, there is much levity in the degree to which the men are made to appear foolish, and to be rather easily manipulated by their women. Further, constant sexual innuendos abound. There is humorous interplay between the choruses of old men and women. Clearly, the language is very earthy and bawdy. For example, in Part 12, an exchange between several chorus members goes thusly: The woman threatens, ââ¬Å"Suppose I let fly a good kick at you?â⬠Whereupon, the old man rejoins with, ââ¬Å"I should see your thing then.â⬠Then, the woman, older herself as well, has the last word with stating, ââ¬Å"You would see that, for all my age, it is very well plucked.â⬠(Aristophanes 753) Further, a primary component of the costuming was an enormous phallus, constructed from leather. And all the men persistently maintain large penile erections. In addition, theres sexual referencing throughout the play. Then, there are incongruous and rid iculous situations as well. A definite slapstick element is present as women run after old men using their spindles as weapons.Advertising Looking for essay on comparative literature? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Then, too, even the dialogue between Lysistrata and the commissioner debating the futility of war is mildly funny. (Aristophanes 782) In addition, note how Aristophanes blends the slapstick scene of the women chasing of old men with weapons like weaving spindles and the intellectual humor of the commissioners attempt to argue with Lysistratas exposition of the incompetence of the mens pursuit of the war. The culmination comes when the warriors return from the Peloponesian Wars, all with gigantic erections. Their women tease them further by showing them a nude female servant, which only makes the men feel more desperate. However, the women will not allow their men sexual satisfaction, until all Athenians a nd Spartans declare a truce. In the second play, She Stoops to Conquer, the elitist Charles Marlow is a study in contradiction. A snob by nature, he does actually seek out servants and maids rather than females from the upper classes. The main premise of the play is that he is en route to meeting up with a family friend, and is ââ¬Å"prankedâ⬠on the way, which actually ends up with a variety of misunderstandings. There is humor in these events, such as culture clashes and identity confusion. Also hilarious are the secretive love entanglements surrounding himself and the other male protagonist. He even has a slightly humorous way of insulting a young lady, claiming, ââ¬Å" Goodness ! What a quantity of superfluous silk hast thou got about thee, girl! (Goldsmith 41) Then, on his journey, he becomes lost, and levity ensues when he and his companion are told, Why, gentlemen, if you know neither the road you are going, nor where you are, nor the road you came, the first thing I h ave to inform you is, that - you have lost your way. (Goldsmith 55) This is definitely understated humor.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Humor in Lysistrata and She Stoops to Conquer: Still Funny Today specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Finally, another example that will provoke a chuckle is the scene between Tony and Hastings. Hastings asks eagerly, where has Tony left the ladies. Tony them replies, by way of a riddle, ââ¬Å"Left them? Why, where should I leave them, but where I found them? (Goldsmith 176) In summary, these are but a few of the scenes and references from these two plays that may be as funny today, as they were at the time of the original productions. It is definitely true that although humor evolves through time, some elements of levity remain both timeless and universal. Green Buildings Improve Occupants Health Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words - 1
Green Buildings Improve Occupants Health - Essay Example Construction of a green building is exceptionally costly as opposed to construction of a regular building. Before an individual is able to construct a green building he must consolidate a lot of money (Coussens, Pp 43). Individuals may save money from less energy consumption, but before this, they need to pay handsomely. Construction of green buildings is dreadfully expensive because eco-friendly materials used in building is not available in many regions. These materials have to be imported from other parts, thus increasing construction cost. There is a lot of indoor pollution in green building because these buildings are heavily sealed, hence ventilation is not enough. This worsens if the builder uses materials that emittoxic substances as it may result to health problems to the occupant. Green buildings are built in a manner that ensures maximum utilization of light. This results in construction of the buildings in the opposite direction to the neighborhood buildings, thus causing problems with the neighbors. Green buildings may take a long time before they are completed and this may put the home owners in difficult situations. The home owners are in difficult situations because some of them want the building to be completed at a specific time (Coussens, Pp 54). Green houses may take long before they are completed because materials are scarce and they have to be shipped from other countries. Another cause of delay is unavailable recycled materials that are supposed to be used in construction. It is difficult to install air cooling features that are self regulating like natural environment.

The Masque of the Red Death Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
The Masque of the Red Death - Research Paper Example Prince Prospero was the only place that the prince and his nobility friends and guest would feel safe, since there was security against any external intrusion, even the intrusion of death. The inside of the castleââ¬â¢s wall was characterized by happiness, while the outside was characterized by sadness, pain and death. Inside Prince Prosperoââ¬â¢s castle, there was ââ¬Å"musicians, there was Beauty, there was wineâ⬠(Poe, 21). All these elements were brought together in order to keep the guests to the castle entertained and at peace, despite the menace that was ruling outside the walls of the castle. Nevertheless, even when the inside of the castle seemed to be safer than the outside world, Prince Prospero and his guests still lived in an illusion and in a world of unreal. The attempt to bring in musicians, beauty, games, wine and decorations into the castle was meant to create an environment where happiness can thrive (Hayes, 88). Nevertheless, as it turns out, happiness is far away from the prince and his guest, just as the safety from death is away from the rest of the poor people who are facing the red death outside of the walls of the castle. The red death had already killed half of the kingdom, and the scare it sent throughout the kingdom caused Prince Prospero decide to stay inside the castle until the plague will have completely gone away. The prince entered the castle and welded the doors shut, so that nobody would enter into the castle and bring in the plague (Slick, 24). This attempt symbolizes the extents to which man can ago in an attempt to escape death, by doing a nything that is possible to escape the chances of interacting with scenarios or events that can cause death. However, even when all measures against death have been taken, it is never enough to keep death away from man, since it will eventually find its way into manââ¬â¢s life, despite all the

Vaccines and Misinformation Surrounding Them
Vaccines and Misinformation Surrounding Them Celeste Clark An Argumentative Exploration into Vaccines and Misinformation Surrounding Them: TL;DR, Vaccination and Autism Have No Correlation Since the late 1990s, myths about the risk of a link between standard infant vaccination and those administered being autistic as a result, as well as general superstition or skepticism over the effectiveness and safety of vaccines, have been perpetuated and grown in popularity. So much so, that the president (at time of writing, Donald J. Trump) has questioned their safety, potentially putting millions of lives at risk. Vaccination is important for the health and well being of a community, as well as the human race, and should not be disputed. The belief in the chance of developing autism from vaccination is a harmful conviction to autistic people and children who dont get vaccinated because of their parents irrational fear that says, through their actions, I would rather my child die of a preventable disease than have a disorder. Especially in the current climate of alternative facts and conflicting information, it is imperative one should mold their beliefs to fit the facts, not m old the facts to fit their beliefs. Firstly, the positive (a double-meaning here of favorable and certain) effects of vaccination. On the authority of the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention), Although children continue to get several vaccines up to their second birthday, these vaccines do not overload the immune system. Every day, your healthy babys immune system successfully fights off millions of antigens-the parts of germs that cause the bodys immune system to respond. The antigens in vaccines come from weakened or killed germs so they cannot cause serious illness. Vaccines contain only a tiny amount of the antigens that your baby encounters every day, even if your child receives several vaccines in one day. People are usually vaccinated when they are very young, since their immune systems are weak and not well developed. At their young age, they have a higher risk of contracting and failing to successfully combat diseases they come in contact with. The process of developing and testing vaccines begins with a laboratory, continues with clinical trials, and ends with the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), who must approve a vaccine, its safety, and its effectiveness before its distribution and use in the United States. It is such a controlled and extensive process, it typically takes 10 to 15 years of research and testing before the vaccine is presented to, and approved or rejected by, the FDA. Vaccines, in their preventative nature, will likely seem to have a lack of effects to the person they are administered to-e.g., Person A gets vaccinated and nothing changes. Their life goes on as normal, and they do not notice that they have not come down with the disease that the vaccine counteracted. However, Person B was not vaccinated, gets the disease, and feels the full effects of what the vaccine silently prevented in Person A. For such a simple, quick procedure with a low-profile effect, its incredible the positive response it can have on an individual and a community. That, coupled with the fact almost all insurance covers it, makes it seem rather appalling more people fail to take advantage of it. An adverse event is, essentially, a coincidence; a health problem that occurs following vaccination that possibly could be induced by a vaccine. A side effect is a reaction shown to correlate to a vaccine by scientific studies and tests. The difference between adverse events and side effects is significant, especially in an argument as controversial and serious as this. It is important to recognise that personal anecdotes are not evidence. Adverse events reported to the VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) are not necessarily side effects caused by vaccination. Vaccines do not affect or alter genes in any way, and gene mutation is what most likely causes autism, stated here by the Autism Society, There is no known single cause for autism spectrum disorder, but it is generally accepted that it is caused by abnormalities in brain structure or function. Brain scans show differences in the shape and structure of the brain in children with autism compared to in neurotypical children. Researchers do not know the exact cause of autism but are investigating a number of theories, including the links among heredity, genetics and medical problems. In many families, there appears to be a pattern of autism or related disabilities, further supporting the theory that the disorder has a genetic basis. While no one gene has been identified as causing autism, researchers are searching for irregular segments of genetic code that children with autism may have inherited. Autism is a developmental disorder, a broad spectrum of different symptoms and traits, found in people of all races, genders, ages, etc. It is becoming more commonly diagnosed due to increased knowledge. It is not a disease, nor is it curable or caused by vaccines. This quote from the article Vaccines Dont Cause Autism, but Thats Not the Point by Leslie Waghorn explains the moral wrong of accusing vaccination of provoking autism, and how it affects autistic people: . . . The panel discussion being broadcast was teens and adults with autism and how federal funding could better support them. As the show closed, the moderator asked if anyone on the panel felt a vaccine had caused their autism. Silence. One teen panelist spoke up, no, but it hurts that you would ask that question. The moderators tone softened, he apologized and asked why. . . . As I recall his response was, because it makes me feel like Im damaged or broken, when Im not. I was born this way. My brain just works differently than most other peoples. When people talk about vaccines and autism it makes me feel like Im not a person but a bad result. It reminds me that no one wants a kid like me and parents will risk their kids lives and everyone elses just to make sure their kid doesnt turn out like me. Even if vaccines did cause autism, it isnt a death sentence. Vaccine-preventable diseases can be. Children are not better off dead than disabled. A Global Perspective on Schooling :: Education Technology Essays
A Global Perspective on Schooling Universities and colleges across the country, as well as the world, have one goal. This goal is to educate citizens to the best of their ability. Although they all have the same objective, each of these schools has a different approach from all the others. One aspect of education that is constantly changing is technology. These changes can occur from school to school, or within a specific school. I have chosen to research and compare the different approaches of several universities from both the United States and throughout the world. This paper discusses the schools I have chosen to research, the variety of majors available at these schools, and how technology is presented in the schools. The United States is a very diverse country regarding both its people and its education styles. The State University of New York College at Fredonia, University of South Carolina, Utah State University and the University of California Davis are four very different schools within our country. The College of the Bahamas, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, University of Qatar, and Kazan State University are also very diverse schools located throughout the world. Although these schools were chosen to sample techniques used with technology, this is an extremely small sampling of what is available to students all over the world. SUNY Fredonia, located in Fredonia, NY is a college that offers many degree options and is very culturally diverse. The website itself is somewhat plain, but as we all know from the Penn State website, many things lie hidden within. I believe that I would not have know about many of these things if I hadnââ¬â¢t been a student at Fredonia State at one point. This site has a search engine that allows the user to search for educators, students, degree programs, and student life to name a few. The University of South Carolina in Columbia, SC has an interesting website that draws the user in. This site, once again, has a search engine and allows the user to choose from several areas of interest. There is also a specific link to Technology Resources that leads to several other technology related issues. The University of California Davis, in Davis, CA, has a businesslike appearance to its website. Their main objective is to get across the importance of academics. On a secondary page I found a link to Information and Educational Technology. On this page the user will find information on computer rooms, computing accounts, security, technical support and training.

Crime Rate in Centervale Essay
If one was to compare the crime in Centervale to that of Alaska or Alabama it would be clear that Centervale has the highest crime total. If one was to compare the crime rate it would be clear that Alabama has in fact the highest crime rate with Alaska and then Centervale sitting very close in numbers. Alabama has the highest population and Alaska has the lowest, but this would mean that Alabama would not be the safest place to live. In fact an individual would want to live in either Alaska or Centervale. Centervale has a lower aggravated assault rate than that of Alaska, but Alaska has a lower robbery rate that that of both Centervale and Alabama. When looking for a new place to locate its always a great decision to check out how a city, county, suburb, or state hold up against that of other similar places when it comes to crime. No one wants to live in a place where they are afraid to leave their homes. When looking at the actually numbers Centervale is the highest followed by Alabama and then Alaska, but if an individual was to look at the crime rate then it would appear that Alaska has the highest followed by Alabama and then Centervale, but both Alabama and Centervale are very close in rate percentage. Alaska has a problem with alcohol related crimes, whereas in other locations in the United States drugs and alcohol are secondary to the crime. Information Importance This kind of information is important due to the growing concern that most individuals and families have about the crime not only in their local neighborhoods, but also in places that they may be considering locating too. Itââ¬â¢s also important to find out what programs are in place to keep the crime rate reduced. Each neighborhood has some sort of program in place to help keep children and adolescents occupied so they are less likely to go out and commit a crime, but crime doesnââ¬â¢t always involve children and adolescents. Crime can and is often committed by adults. Read more:à India Crime Rate Most communities have an early childhood development program in place. Itââ¬â¢s been stated by Paul Leighton (2007), that children enrolled in this program have ââ¬Å"half as many criminal arrests, less likelihood of going to jail, higher earnings and property wealth, and a greater commitment to familyâ⬠. There are also drug treatment, recreation, gang- prevention, education, special curricula, job training, and the labor market (Leighton, 2007). When moving to a new community an individual can call around to find what programs have been put into place to reduce the crime rate and what else can be done to help reduce the crime. Parents with small children wish to make sure that they are bringing their children to a safe environment with programs set in place to help the children and adolescents occupied after school. Definitions of Crime Crime is defined as ââ¬Å"the act or the commission of an act that is forbidden or the omission of a duty that is commanded by a public law and that makes the offender liable to punishment by that lawâ⬠(Merriam-Webster, 2013). Alabama and Alaska differ when it comes to crime punishment. Alaska abolished its capital punishment in 1957, but has since then tried to reintroduce it to no avail. Alabama on the other hand does have capital punishment and certain crimes can lead to the death penalty. These crimes are capital murder charges, rape, robbery, and burglary. Alaska imprisons their convicted criminals for either short period of times to life. In both states children and adolescents are charged as juveniles unless found to have committed an adult crime such as murder (non-accidental), robbery that ends up with loss of life or assault or rape. Rape charges can be difficult to try depending on the age of the child or adolescents and how much understanding of the charges and their understanding of right and wrong. Charging children in an adult court can be difficult to do since their understanding and reasoning is far different and underdeveloped than that of an adult. Recommendations Recommendations to help reduce the crime rate would to beef up the police and special crime units to help get a grasp on the crime in the state. Have better programs put into place within the prisons/jails. This will give a positive opportunity and outlet for the prisoners so they will not wish to reoffend. Allow employers that wish to hire ex-convicts the opportunity to sit down with the convict prior to their release. This will give the individual something positive to look forward to and a better outlook on life. Have programs set up for ex-cons along with programs set up for those who may need a positive outlet. Ex-cons need the structure to help them adapt better to outside life than to be just ââ¬Å"dumpedâ⬠on the streets after their sentence with the hopes of not reoffending. Many individuals feel they have nothing ââ¬Å"outsideâ⬠so why even try. In many cases this is true, the individuals family and or friends have given up on them or they have a difficult time finding a job, so they do what they believe is the only thing left and this causes them to reoffend. Conclusion In conclusion crime is a scary thing for any family or individual, but with careful consideration and knowing the facts needed one can make the correct decision. Many criminals that are within the prison/jail system are those who have reoffended, but due to the unknown these individuals tend to end back up within the system. Families and friends of those ex-cons need to be there for the individual for emotional support. Those who donââ¬â¢t have the proper support feel alone and often believe they need to be back where they were. References Crime in the United States. U.S. Department of Justice (2009). Jihad Vs McWorld Essay
In nature, there are always at least two forces acting on each other. They either tend to be always in opposition to one another to ultimately destroy the other or to create a new force that is a mixture of elements coming from each of the present forces. In society, Benjamin Barber identified two forces or tendencies, given the political and economic trends at the time of his writing, which may come in to being and could pose a threat to democracy as we know it: tribalism and globalism. At the present time, ââ¬Å"Jihad Vs. McWorldâ⬠offers a good retrospective view of things that had just recently occurred. Students of history are offered a good summary of how things were going at the end of the last century and how these could possibly come out, if it had not yet turned out to be so, today, and a possible means of securing democracy that can withstand the forces of McWorld and Jihad. As a political theorist, Barber offers some insights of the trends that were going on in the 1990s and as well as some factors that are inextricably linked to these trends. These trends, McWorld and Jihad, he described as both being undemocratic in its effects to the citizenry. In McWorld, he talks of the ââ¬Å"four imperativesâ⬠that govern its dynamics. Market imperative, resource imperative, information-technology imperative and ecological imperative, according to Barber, make up the working guidelines that govern the dynamics of McWorld. Personally, it may seem a bit far-reaching to talk about these imperatives verging on generalities, but then again he is trying to clarify a concept that is in operation in a big world and that because of these imperatives such a big world in ever shrinking smaller with the passing of each day. In Jihad, he talks of the struggles of people based on ethnic, racial, cultural, and religious differences whose final aim is ââ¬Å"to redraw boundariesâ⬠¦ [and] escape McWorldââ¬â¢s dully insistent imperatives. â⬠At first reading, it may be quite surprising that these same reasons for which minorities struggle to be recognized within existing national boundaries are claimed to be the self-same reasons for which nations were born; nations composed of various groups of people with many differing aspects but with at least one common feature that became the focal point of their unification in the past after the break up of empires. This initial surprise can probably be overcome if one looks at the latter concept as a case of self-determination against a colonial master and the former as a case for self-identification. For both McWorld and Jihad, Barber paints grim pictures if in case one of the two takes the upper hand over the other and it really does not matter which wins in the end for both have undemocratic tendencies. McWorld is said to offer peace and prosperity and relative unity while Jihad brings forth a sense of community, kinship and solidarity. Seemingly, the offerings to the citizenry of McWorld and Jihad are mutually exclusive. One might not have a slice of McWorld and another slice of Jihad at the same time. McWorld hinges on interdependence while Jihad is based on exclusion. But Barber offer a middle ground for which the economic benefits of McWorld can be availed of while maintaining the exclusionist ideal of Jihad. He offers a representative confederal government as an ideal solution to address the excesses of both McWorld and Jihad; a form of ââ¬Å"decentralized participatory democracy,â⬠that has some elements of parochialism, communitarianism and participatory governance. Barber argues that, after all as a tree grows from the roots going upward, democracy starts from the bottom up and not from the top going down. This view I share with Barber. People compose nations and it is essential, I believe, that the ideal principles of self-determination and government be well laid out and understood by this self-same people so as to avoid the excesses of Jihad and McWorld or at least minimize them. The discussions of Barber in Jihad Vs. McWorld creates a dark picture that sometimes we could not easily accept that we could even dismiss it as a far-reaching generalization of the trends of the time that would eventually dissipate. But the beauty of this essay lies in the fact that it came at a time when the events that he was discussing were but recent and may have been witnessed first-hand by those among us right now. We could easily ascertain the accuracy and veracity of his claims from other resources or even from our own memories, if it is sufficient enough (i. . had we been born a few years before or within the years of the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Quebecois unrest, etc. ). Furthermore, the solution that he proposes is something that is not totally radical and would pose as a mild readjustment of the current system of have now. Students of history, both those studying it in the halls of learning and those studying it in the realm of wide world, can benefit greatly from this work by Barber. In exposing the excesses of McWorld and Jihad, he did not indulge in radical rhetoric and offered a middle ground solution that could take in the best of both worlds, so to speak. He leaves the reader the choice whether to adopt his proposal or at least gives room for others to expose a better one than his, after all this is the very essence of the democracy that he espouses. It may take time to reap the benefits of finding or adopting a middle-ground solution of Jihad and McWorld and could not be rushed. Moderation is the key and haste is an invisible wall. In the end, the tortoise has always won over the hare.

Hospitality And Tourism Management Tourism Essay Example Hospitality And Tourism Management Tourism Essay Hospitality And Tourism Management Tourism Essay The subject of strategic direction is one of those hot button concerns that had attracted a important sum of attending over the past four decennaries. Strategic is a agencies adopted by the direction in order to accomplish the long term aims. Strategic direction Process, is a procedure through which organisations analyze and learn from their internal and external environments set up strategic way, create schemes that are intended to travel the organisation in that way, and implement those schemes, all in an attempt to fulfill cardinal stakeholders. In general, a company should choose schemes that take advantage of organisational strengths and environmental chances or neutralize or get the better of organisational failings and environmental menaces. After schemes are formulated, plans for implementin g them are established and carried out. The environment is the primary determiner of any strategic success. A good direction is associated with finding which scheme will outdo fit environmental, proficient, and human forces at a peculiar point in clip, and so working to transport it out. Some surveies show that the ability to aline the accomplishments and other resources of the organisation with the demands and demands of the environment can be a beginning of competitory advantage. ( Cathy Enz, Strategic Hospitality Management, 2010 ) . As it has been mentionated before the strategic direction procedure has three nucleus countries: Strategic Analysis, Strategic development and strategic execution. Strategic Analysis referes to organisation, its mission, vision, value, civilization and aims have to be analyzed and examined. Strategic direction provides value for the people involved in the organization-its stakeholders. Strategic Development: the scheme options have to be developed and so selected. To be successful, the scheme is likely to be built on the peculiar accomplishments of the organisation and the particular relationship that it has or can develop with those outside such as providers, clients, distributers and authorities. In short for many organisations, this will intend developing advantages over rivals that are sustainable over clip. There are normally many options available and one or more will hold to be selected. There are three degrees of schemes to be formulated: concern unit degree ( Departmental sc hemes ) ; corporate degree ( Organizational Strategies ) and International degree ( Global Strategies ) . Strategic Execution: the select options now have to be implemented. There may be major troubles in footings of motive, power relationship, authorities dialogues, company acquisitions and many other affairs. It is really of import clarify that a scheme that can non be implemented is non deserving the paper it is written on. ( Richard Lynch, Strategic Management, 2009 ) . To Summaryze organisations need to develop schemes in order to optimise the usage of these resources otherwise will non acquire the success. Particularly, it is indispensable to look into the sustainable competitory advantage that will let the organisation to last and thrive against competition. In other words it is indispensable for a company to make and develop schemes in order to accomplish the long -term ends and aims. The importance of the strategic direction is extremely important, merely allows and organisation to be more proactive than reactive in determining its ain hereafter ; it allows an organisation to originate and act upon activities and therefore to exercise control over its ain fate. Small, concern proprietors, main executive officers, presidents and directors of many for-profit and non-profit organisations have recognized and realized the benefits of strategic direction. Historically, the rule benefit of strategic direction has been to assist organisations explicate better schemes through the usage of the more systematic, logical and rational attack to strategic pick. Such as fiscal benefits ( betterment in gross revenues, betterment in profitableness and betterment in productiveness ) and non fiscal benefits ( improved apprehension of rivals schemes, enhanced consciousness of menaces, reduced opposition to alter and heighten problem-prevention capablenesss ) . But in today s universe we can easy reflex the undermentioned betterment benefits in organisation s strategic procedure direction like for illustration: taking an organization-wide, proactive attack to a altering planetary universe ; constructing an executive squad that serves as a theoretical account of cross-functional or horizontal teamwork ; holding an intense executive development and strategic orientation procedure ; specifying focused, quantifiable results steps of success ; doing intelligent budgeting determinations ; clear uping your competitory advantage ; cut downing struggle authorising the organisation ; supplying clear guidelines for daily determination devising ; making a critical mass for alteration, authorising in-between directors, concentrating everyone in the organisation in the same overall model, rushing up execution of the nucleus schemes and supplying touchable tools for covering with the emphasis of alteration. The associatio believes that this move will bear an imp act on the industry. STRENGHTS Failing Strong market place Strong gross grow Technology enabled services Strong concern theoretical account Overdependence on the US market Weak runing border Opportunity Menace Expansion into China and Southeast Asia Recovery of concern travel market Competition Labor issues Rising involvement rates One of the chief concerns of the group sing gross revenues schemes has been its overdependence on the US market. While the company has more than doubled its market portion of suites in the United States over the last 15 old ages, its market portion outside the United States is less than 1 % , go forthing considerable chance for enlargement. Identifying new international chances is a precedence. In financial 2008, Marriott operated 2,349 out of 2,741 hotels in the US. This represents more than 85 % of the entire hotels. This over dependance has affected Marriott significantly, particularly at clip of slow economic system. Furthermore, the company has merely a little presence in the huge, and yet still turning, Asiatic market. This deficiency of geographic spread in its grosss is a major failing for the company. Although the company s operating border has increased marginally in financial 2009 from 4.7 % to 4.8 % over financial 2008, its runing border has lagged behind industry norm. Over the five twelvemonth period from 2004-2009, the company s operating border, which was 4.6 % , trailed the industry norm of 10.2 % . Weak runing borders indicate increasing costs and can adversely impact the long term fiscal place of the company. The cordial reception industry is characterized by a big figure of participants, with many of them holding a world-wide presence similar to Marriott. There are many big hotel ironss similar to the company, such as InterContinental, Hilton Group, Accor and Hyatt Corporation, who are besides spread outing into possible growing parts such as Asia. Its rival, InterContinental has the largest presence in China with 55 hotels, with programs to duplicate the figure by 2011. Accor has 24 hotels in China, with 33 under planning phase. Marriott has limited presence in India, with programs to present other trade names in the part. Whereas InterContinental has 15 hotels in India and Hilton has re-entered the Indian market. Furthermore, the broad presence of independent hotels particularly in the European part holds a major potency for consolidation. This will increase competition and might ensue in a loss of grosss and market portion for the company. Some of the company s brotherhood contracts i n New York, Chicago, Boston, and many other major metropoliss are set to run out in 2011. The hotel brotherhood is endangering a work stoppage in all of these metropoliss at the same time. The brotherhood s large demand for the ability to unionize more hotels without direction intervention can turn out to be a important menace for the company. The US has seen 17 consecutive involvement rate hikings over the past few old ages. Inflation frights in US may see another rise in the short term. This could impact the company s growing programs by increasing the funding costs. In add-on, lifting involvement rates could take to cut down disbursement by corporate clients, which would impact the company s grosss. A strong market place enables the company good for future growing. However, increasing competition in the planetary cordial reception industry could impact the company s market portion. The company operates hotels in mid-scale, upscale, upper upscale and luxury sections caters to both concern and leisure travellers with its huge portfolio of adjustment services. The company s customer-loyalty plan is besides the largest in the industry and ensures repetition traffic in its hotels. The company s strong hotel grapevine of 75,000 suites ensures that it can consolidate its market place and continue to bring forth extra grosss. The company s increased focal point on engineering as a concern tool has resulted in important investings in bolstering its web based services portfolio. These attempts have given Marriott the best online reserve system in the industry which attracts about six million visitants every month. In add-on to this, the company has besides tied up with expedia.com and hotels.com to drive traffic to its hotels via online channels. Furthermore, the company is able to supply the industry s lowest cost per reserve and lands cross-selling chances. Technology is stopper and drama , thanks to Marriott s sole hight- tech connectivity panel that links laptops, iPods and other personal amusement equipment with province of the art 32 inch high definition Television and sound system. With high-velocity cyberspace entree in all its hotels, and hotels offering Wi-Fi, Marriott leads the industry in maintaining its clients connected. Marriott is developing and proving new systems, including check-in via anteroom booths and wireless handheld devices, every bit good as pre-arrival e-mail verifications that provide clients with local and hotel-specific information prior to their stay. A focal point on engineering will enable the company to bring forth incremental gross revenues every bit good as better the quality of experience for its clients. Marriott works on a concern theoretical account that separates ownership of hotel assets from the direction and franchising of its trade name. The consequence was a split of the company into Host Marriott and Marriott International. Today, Marriott focuses on puting in its trade name, go forthing existent estate investing to 3rd parties ( e.g. , Host Marriott, Sunstone, and Diamondrock ) . This concern scheme is a less capital-intensive theoretical account that generates higher mean returns on assets than existent estate-based theoretical accounts. Marriott s manager-franchisor theoretical account besides ensures a steady fee watercourse. Under the fee-based theoretical account that Marriott pursues, guaranting a steady watercourse of new add-ons to the figure of branded suites under direction or franchise understanding is critical to the company s net incomes growing. Decision: As discussed earlier Marriott International may better to a great extent. With travellers acknowledging that Marriott s trade names represent the highest value and quality in the industry its hotels could take progress of this state of affairs an enjoyed at least a 15 % gross per available room premium to direct rivals. Over the following old ages, the company will necessary hold to anticipate proprietors and franchisees to put a important sum of money in belongings betterments, that reflect its new expression and feel . One of the most transformative alterations is the new bedclothes, which is now in about all Marriott branded hotels in add-on to high yarn count sheets and multiple pillows, the replacing of the traditional bedcovers with newly laundered linens is doing Marriott s bedding the cleanest and freshest of any mayor hotel concatenation. Eight out of 10 concern travellers said they would be willing to pay more for the new, advanced room. The company has announced programs to add over 600 hotel belongingss by 2015, the majority of the add-ons will be in the emerging markets of India, where it plans to hold 100 hotel belongingss and other states include China and Southeast Asia. This will add a great dimension to the success of Marriott International. The growing of the Marriott s operations outside of the United States besides makes them susceptible to the hazards of making concern internationally due to geopolitical factors and region-specific economic resecions. Certain countries such as China and India are dining, which could well ioncrease net incomes dut to part specific economic roars. However, concentrated recession could take down grosss, addition costs, cut down net incomes or otherwise crippled concern. The recent economic recession has caused a enormous impact on all the industry sectors including the cordial reception industry. The company must invariably detect the alteration in the client tendencies in all the major parts it operates. An innovate program sing direction system in Marriott International should be transportation directors from one part to other part in order to increase the flexibleness of the directors. The following possible measure is to avoid investings in the parts that are involved in political and war struggles such as Afghanistan at this minute. Meanwhile the rivals are implemented IT strategies confederations that are non productive, Marriott International continue to concentrate on service, leveraging its apprehension of invitee and engineering, through such industry taking enterprises as Spirit To Server its Guests , for illustration today guest can utilize the web to order room service prior to arrival. Local civilizations must non be compromised irrespective of the success the organisation achieves in its international ventures. By organizing strategic confederations with international circuit operators Marriott can happen new influx of invitees. The Marriott system continues to turn with a healthy grapevine of hotels that means that invitee will hold more picks across more trade names in more locations than of all time. In few words Marriott is ready to present what its clients want, when they want it, the manner they want it. Its superb trade names, merchandises and services are making a new audience and dramaticall y altering perceptual experience of travel.

Growth of Convention Centers across the Country Essay
Growth of Convention Centers across the Country - Essay Example In the United States of America, convention center is becoming a part and parcel of every day life. The recent mushrooming of convention centers in every nook and corner of the country itself is a proof of its fast development and necessity. In simple terms convention center is a large meeting place where formal business and professional meetings, conferences etc. are arranged. According to Atlantic City Convention Center, convention center is the "Facility designed to accommodate multiple group s or extremely large groups; exhibit halls; meeting rooms, ball rooms or banquet space; no sleeping rooms." (Glossary of Terms. Convention Center, 2007). The logic behind conducting business and other formal meetings in a convention center is that it is common place where people from different parts of the country/world can reach and assemble in a common place which is convenient to all. Originally convention centers were designed for formal business meeting, conferences. In contrast to this, modern convention centers are being used for a number of occasions including social events such as marriages, family get-together and as parking place for tourists. The spurt of tourism development the world over has made a great fillip for convention centers and they have grown in such a way that both are complementary to each other. Convention centers enable the development of tourism industry in a big way by attracting both domestic and international travelers. They have become a vital element in the tourism industry as some customers specify the name of convention centers where they would like to stay and enjoy their leisure time. It is a co mmon fact that MICE industry has no existence without convention center. The letter 'c' in the acronym stands for convention. That itself reflects that convention center enhances the scope of MICE industry and that they are complementary to each other. Another group of beneficiary of convention centers is corporate. Conducting meeting and conferences at convention center has become the order of the day among corporate people not only because of convenience but for prestige issue as well. Corporate have regular meeting, conferences and events like product launching and all these are being happened at some important convention center. Convention centers have emerged as a focal point in an intense competition among cities for a share of the economically important meetings and exhibition market. In a nut shell, convention centers have grown to become a crucial element of social, professional and corporate life. Their contributions to these various segments are priceless and remarkable. Evolution of Convention Centers in United States of America: The American communities have experienced a sudden growth of convention centers and it facilities over the last two decades. The country had 193 convention centers in the year 1986 offering minimum 25,000 square feet of exhibit space. The number rose to 254 and 322 by 1996 and 2006 consecutively. Their exhibition space also rose by 150 percent increase. The amount of investment put up by the state and local government in the year 1993 alone was $23.2 billion. (Sanders, 2007, p.2). The spurt in the development in the sector has made the giants like Chicago's McCormick and Las Vegas to enhance their exhibit space. The government has been financially supportive to pen new centers and

Prevention of Falls in Elderly Rehabilitation Patients Essay
Prevention of Falls in Elderly Rehabilitation Patients - Essay Example Research on the elderly has attained ethnographic cross-cultural comparative proportions of investigation, being one of the most necessary requirements of society. Professional acute care, community care with their circumstantial inadequacies and the situational hopelessness of the elderly in those last sad years motivate Sociologists to invest more time on finding alternatives and innovations. One point all the care facilities and Governments usually forget is that the care is necessity-dependent and not just age-dependent. These articles belong to the researched data connected to this field. As the falling of elderly has become a main problem especially so in the western society, because it delays rehabilitation and healing, it is necessary to have as much information as possible on the given area. Critical assessment and comparison of two or more research pieces can give more insight to care workers like me who have to focus on the problem. This is a very pertinent area for a care giving professional and it is better to analyze the research available than simply scanning through it. I would like to appraise both the works, analyse them and compare them. I would also like to critically go through them and point out the areas of deficiency and shortcomings. I have tried to find similarities, glaring dissimilarities and various points that the researches have touched in the process. I feel it is important because of the seriousness of the problem that can make the last days of the elderly very painful, lonely and ailing. It is important to welcome as much research as possible in this region. LIMITATIONS: Both the research work show very limited perspectives of the problem. They do not envelop the entire relevant issue. Instead, they focus on certain practical advice and connected research without concentrating much on day-to-day activities of the care homes that are trying hard for a successful rehabilitation. As these researches are not highly extensive, their field strength is rather limited. Even though they represent two highly important sides of the problem, one approaching from physical angle and another from mental, it is difficult to conclude that both the papers have achieved anything absolutely conclusive. LITERATURE REVIEW: Aging touches different parameters in the Western and Eastern World because in Eastern countries, families take care of the elders under normal circumstances. Problems facing the elderly in European Countries, Australia, USA or Eastern Countries are identical. Caring for the frail elderly does not limit itself to one region or country."Older people in European society are therefore not to be regarded as a homogeneous mass but as a diverse group of people who may have only one characteristic in common - their age" says Hugman (1994, p.7). Restorative care is distinctively different from usual care because they have to be matched with the particular individualistic
